Piaggio has filed a new patent that hints at a fresh aerodynamic idea for Aprilia’s future sports bikes, likely based on the RSV4. Instead of adding more electronic or active aero systems, this concept uses fixed panels mounted near the tail section, close to the pillion footpegs, to improve airflow and stability.
The vertical panels, marked as ‘8’ in the patent drawings, sit just behind the rider’s legs. Their design serves two purposes. In a straight line, the panels help smooth out airflow as it moves from the fairing towards the rear of the bike. By aligning with the outside of the rider’s legs and tapering backwards, they create a cleaner aerodynamic profile. This could reduce drag and potentially improve top speed or fuel efficiency.
In corners, the system works differently. As the rider hangs off, the inside panel becomes exposed to airflow. Shaped like a small aerofoil and positioned almost parallel to the road, it can generate downforce when the bike is leaned over. This helps press the bike into the tarmac during fast cornering, improving stability. The opposite panel remains shielded by the rider’s leg, preventing uneven aerodynamic forces.
Because the panels are fixed, the setup avoids the added weight and complexity of active aero systems. The mounting method also suggests it could be adapted to existing designs. With Aprilia no longer a factory team in World Superbike, this concept may be aimed at limited-run, track-focused RSV4 models rather than mainstream road bikes.
