TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Three new sheriff’s patrol cars will soon be rolling through Brown County thanks to a federal grant that provided the funds for the vehicles.
The announcement of the $177,000 federal grant came early Monday afternoon from Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.
U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, D-Kan., made the announcement Friday at the Brown County Sheriff’s office.

Merchant said the grant provides “much-needed funding” as his officers seek to replace three vehicles, two of which have more than 150,000 miles and one of which has more than 220,000 miles.
“Due to budget constraints over the years,” Merchant said, “we have not been able to replace patrol vehicles as needed.
“This grant enables the sheriff’s office to have up-to-date reliable equipment to respond to emergencies throughout the county.
“Senator Moran has been very dedicated when it comes to supporting law enforcement agencies in Kansas and we deeply appreciate his efforts on obtaining this funding for our sheriff’s office.”
