The Lexus NX Hybrid is one of the brand’s most affordable models. It’s a small family SUV with a hybrid powertrain that balances efficiency and class.

A close cousin to the formidable Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, the Lexus NX Hybrid sets itself apart from Toyota relatives and segment rivals thanks to a unique design language. Is the NX Hybrid worth its $45,000+ price tag, or are alternatives much more value-oriented?

USA TODAY Cars tested the luxury hybrid to see if it lives up to the Lexus name and the brand’s reputation of reliability, style and great tech for budget-friendly prices. The small SUV was pleasantly surprising in some categories and underwhelming in others.

The NX Hybrid is easy on the eyes and arguably much more aesthetically pleasing than its more affordable relative, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Its exterior is sporty but it has enough cabin and cargo space to be practical (for some drivers).

Lexus’s small hybrid SUV benefits from multiple electric motors that both boost its horsepower and make it more efficient. One of the most enticing characteristics that the NX Hybrid possesses is its affordability. In an age where it can be difficult to find a new SUV (let alone a hybrid) for under $50,000, this Lexus deservedly turns some heads.

The NX Hybrid base model provides significant value for the money with a starting price below the average new vehicle price of over $50,000 (according to Kelley Blue Book). Who should buy the Lexus NX Hybrid?

Lexus’ NX Hybrid is relatively affordable as far as compact luxury hybrid SUVs go. It’s best for drivers who want the refinement and tech that comes with a luxury model, combined with the efficiency of a hybrid. Additionally, there are enough trims and configurations available to find a model tailored to your power, tech and feature needs as a driver.

If space is a huge concern, an alternative or a midsize model could be a better choice, as the NX’s rear row and cargo area aren’t the roomiest. This luxury hybrid SUV is ideal for commuters who plan on the occasional weekly grocery run. As far as practicality goes, its big brother, the RX Hybrid, is the better-selling Lexus model for a reason.
